Media artists conventionally refer to video and music and film, as time-based media: human-created structured images or sounds dynamically varying as a function of time. In this seminar we permute the expression to think of media-based time, of time as an effect rather than an index. We turn from time to temporality – the sense of duration, dynamic, change. And speaking of dynamic process, we turn from media to mediation.
What is implied but not foregrounded by this formulation? Experience and subjectivation. Thinking non-anthropocentrically or cosmopolitically motivates the contingent construal of subjects and objects. Thinking dynamically, we will be concerned not so much with metaphysics — the science of what is, but with processual pragmatics — how entities and occasions come to be.
We take as guides, examples from film, responsive installation, and live event – the arts of time that modulate experience via responsive media.
We will think with Merleau-Ponty, Bergson, James, Whitehead, Debaise, Simondon, Stengers, Combes, Serres, Maturana and Varela, leavened by speculations with Carlo Rovelli, Giuseppe Longo and other adventurous friends.

Students experienced in timebased media or movement arts are welcome as well as students interested in time and temporaility.
This philosophical seminar accompanies a workshop on composing responsive environments to be offered at a place and occasion to be determined.
